  • Excellence in everything that we do.
  • Dedication to do whatever it takes to provide the best care.
  • Innovation to promote positive change.
  • Compassion for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
  • Teamwork: pulling together for the common good.
  • Stewardship of our resources.

Our History

Cornerstone Hospice was founded in 1981 by a group of nurses in the Eustis, FL community. They had been called on many occasions to care for some of their elderly neighbors and several had learned of this new concept of care called 'hospice' which derives from the word 'hospitality'. The nurses sought to bring a higher level of organization to their work. What started out as a dream became reality in the mid 1980's with the creation of services for one county. Lake Hospice was licensed to provide comprehensive hospice services to the community.

With the help of donors, the Tavares Hospice House opened in February 1991. While it was the second hospice house built in the state of Florida, it has the honor of being the first free-standing hospice house in the Sunshine State. By 2010, Cornerstone grew to its current service area of seven rather large and populous counties in Florida, and four of Georgia's largest counties.

Cornerstone Hospice services are available in Central Florida - throughout all the cities and towns located in Lake, Sumter, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties, AND we now provide hospice services in several counties in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Cornerstone's team of professionals are regularly recognized as experts in discussions regarding dying and associated grief. Our education programs regarding both are used by other hospices around the country as we seek to better educate Americans on the great benefit of choosing hospice care. We are also proud of the affiliations with state and national organizations who challenge us to be the best at what we do.

One of the top honors we appreciate is The Joint Commission Accreditation for Excellence in patient and family satisfaction. Other licenses and affiliations include:

  • National Partnership for Hospice Innovation (member)
  • Florida Hospices and Palliative Care Association (member)
  • Medicare and Medicaid Certified
  • Florida State License #5019096, Agency for Health Care Administration
